Biofilm Short Course

The five-day, hands-on course will address the following topics:

  • Biofilm imaging with light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Biofilm flow cells and reactors
  • Biofilm microprofiling with microsensors (e.g., O2, H2, NH4+, pH)
  • Biofilm modeling with AQUASIM and COMSOL

Doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty are encouraged to apply. Participation is limited to 20 attendees. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please apply early. Accepted applicants will be sent a link for registration.

The registration fee is $100 for academic participants and $500 for industrial participants, including course materials and one dinner.  

The course will be taught by Rob Nerenberg (Notre Dame), Erika Espinosa-Ortiz (Montana State University - Center for Biofilm Engineering), Cristian Picioreanu (KAUST), Caitlin Proctor (Purdue University), and other Notre Dame faculty, guest faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. Participants are encouraged to bring their own samples.
